2009-2010 Student Handbook

Dress Code

* As a Christian school, it is our belief that appropriate dress is a necessary component in the development of dignity and self-discipline. Therefore, parents, teachers, staff and students are urged to observe a modest manner conducive to a serious learning environment.
* In general, it is expected that students and their clothing be clean and neat in appearance. General good grooming and health habits are to be followed. Hair should be neat and clean and of a natural color. Sloppy, oversized, ripped or torn clothing will not be accepted.
* Preschool and Kindergarten students need not adhere to the dress code except as noted for Kindergartners under the Chapel section below.

DAILY DRESS (minor Wednesday changes noted below)

* Pants - Boys and Girls
* The following pants styles can be worn in the solid colors of navy blue and tan/khaki:

Girls may wear solid-colored navy-blue or tan/khaki and navy/gold or navy/white plaid skirts, skorts or jumpers. It is suggested that shorts, tights or stockings be worn under skirts and jumpers. Chapel Day (Wednesday)

Wednesday is Chapel dress-up day. Boys must wear a solid or patterned tie. Boys may not wear polo shirts or turtlenecks on Chapel Day. In the summer, as defined above, boys may wear dress-type shorts.

Although skirts and jumpers are preferred, girls may wear pants or skorts to Chapel. Girls may not wear shorts or capris to Chapel. For both boys and girls, sneakers may not be worn to Chapel. In certain circumstances, students will be allowed to change back to sneakers after Chapel.

* This code does not apply to Preschool.

Sneakers are required for all children during gym class and must be a different pair than those worn to school. Grades K-8 will be allowed to wear sweat-type clothing to gym class when deemed appropriate by the Physical Education teacher.

Helpful Information
Many local retailers stock inexpensive clothing that meets the Immanuel Lutheran Dress Code, including Sears, J.C. Penney, Kohl's, Burlington Coat Factory and Target. In addition, you may purchase school clothes from French Toast or Lands' End.

If you are purchasing from the French Toast Web site, you will find a Web page tailored specifically to our dress code. Go to
www.frenchtoast.com and click on "Find Your School's Dress Code" in the top right corner. Then enter source code QS49P6. This source code can also be used with the French Toast catalog. When you place an order with French Toast and enter our school's source code, French Toast will return 5 percent of the sale to Immanuel Lutheran School.

When you order school clothes from the Lands' End School Uniform Catalog
(www.landsend.com), the company will return 3 percent of the order price to the school. Please use our Lands' End Preferred School code when ordering: 9000-4115-3.

Dismissals/Closing

Immanuel Lutheran School hours are from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. for Kindergarten through Grade 8. The school building is open at 8:15 a.m. (except for
Extended Care, which starts at 7:15 a.m.) The 3-year-old preschool class hours are Mondays and Tuesdays, 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. The 4-year-old morning preschool class hours are Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays, 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. The 4-year-old afternoon preschool class hours are 12:45 p.m. to 3:15 p.m., Mondays through Fridays.

At the end of the school day, children in grades K-8 will wait for their buses in designated classrooms. Children who are not taking the school bus home are to be picked up at the far exit of the school. Each car must have a sign with the student's last name in large-print letters posted in the front windshield. Students will be called individually as the cars approach the school. Parents may also park in the rear parking lot and then go to the far stairs and be announced to the students. Students will wait in the end classroom and be dismissed individually by the adult in charge. To avoid congestion and confusion, parents will not wait in the hall for children. For more information on the dismissal procedure, please see the Handbook.

For school delay/cancellation information, please listen to WLAD (800 AM), 98Q (98.3 FM) or WINE (940 AM), or watch the scroll on the bottom of the screen on TV channels 3, 6 and 8. We normally have the same weather delays and closures as the Danbury Public Schools. If we have a delayed opening on an early-dismissal day, the day will become a regular-length day.
Transportation

Students who have a Danbury address may ride the Danbury school bus to and from school. Bus schedules and locations for pick-up and drop-off will be printed in the Danbury News-Times each August. It is the parent's responsibility in bad weather conditions to listen to the radio/television for unplanned early school closures and have back-up arrangements in place for your children.

If the bus is late, call Laidlaw Bus Company at 792-7980. If there is a consistent problem with bus times or drivers, please call the Danbury Board of Education Transportation Department, 797-4708.
